HNTB commissioned this prototype model for the Alsea bridge replacement to present its new design for a citizen’s advisory committee. Spanning Oregon’s Alsea River was a challenge because of the effect of saltwater corrosion on the old bridge structure, requiring extensive maintenance. HNTB engineers designed this new and significantly stronger Alsea bridge replacement.

Using this mock-up model to detail the new bridge’s features to citizens in numerous presentations helped to obtain community support for this design. This is an example of how engineering scale models can propel municipal, as well as commercial, projects toward successful completion.
